Resin Shower Tray: Everything You Need to Know

Discover the advantages, installation, and maintenance of a resin shower tray. Complete guide to choosing the best model.

Nowadays, the resin shower tray has become one of the most common options for bathroom renovations. Why? Because it has almost everything: it's durable, beautiful, and quite easy to use. But the best thing is that it's manufactured in many different versions, with colors, textures, and sizes to suit all tastes. This makes things much easier when the bathroom has an odd shape or if space is a bit tight.

If you're thinking about replacing your bathtub or renovating your shower, you might be interested in learning about its advantages, what to consider before installing it, how to keep it in good condition, and, of course, how much it costs. Let's take a look at it step by step.

What is a resin shower tray?

Simply put, it's a shower base made from a mixture of resins and minerals, topped with a protective layer (usually gel coat). This layer makes it harder, more attractive, and resistant to moisture. And since they're usually between 2 and 3.5 cm thick, they can be installed flush with the floor, which looks very clean... and is also more comfortable for everyone to use.

Advantages worth considering

Fits any corner

One of the most practical things is that it can be custom-made. And if you need to trim it a little during installation, that's fine too. This is great for small bathrooms or bathrooms with columns, awkward corners, or walls that aren't straight (yes, it happens more than you think).

Variety to choose from

There are plain models, stone-effect models, slate-textured models, neutral colors, bolder colors... You can choose the one that best fits the bathroom style you have in mind. From modern to more classic, there's something for everyone.

Safer and more pleasant to the touch

Many models have top-rated non-slip surfaces. This means they reduce the risk of slipping, which is important if you have children or elderly people in the house. Plus, they don't feel that cold like ceramic or metal plates. They're warmer to the touch, and you can tell.

It holds up quite well to trotting.

It doesn't break easily, warp under temperature changes, or deteriorate due to humidity. If properly cared for, it can last for years and look good. And when something lasts without problems... that's always a good thing.

But not everything is perfect: some points to keep in mind

It's not that it has any major flaws, but there are things you should know before you decide:

  • Because they're heavier than acrylic, they must be placed on a level base. Otherwise, they can crack over time.
  • It doesn't react well to harsh chemicals or abrasives. Gel coat can lose its shine or become damaged if not cleaned carefully.
  • As for the price, it's not the most expensive on the market, but it's not the cheapest either. It's somewhere in the middle.

What to look for before buying one?

Thickness and type of placement

If you plan to install it flush with the floor, consider the thickness. Between 2 and 3.5 cm is the most common. You can also install it over the existing flooring if you don't want to do much work.

Don't let the drain fall short

Some modern sprinklers release quite a bit of water, so you need a valve that drains well. Not all models do this equally well, so it's worth checking.

Don't slip

It seems obvious, but we sometimes forget it. Make sure it has a good slip resistance rating, especially if someone in the house needs extra safety when showering.

Finish and resistance

The finish (the gel coat) must withstand daily use. This means it must not scratch easily, fade in the sun or over time, and be easy to clean.

Warranty and spare parts

Ideally, it should come with a multi-year warranty (at least five) and you should be able to get a repair kit in case any scratches or minor dings appear over time. It never hurts.

And how do you install it?

For a proper fit, the base on which it is placed must be flat and level. It's better to use polyurethane adhesive instead of mortar, as this prevents tension that could damage the plate.

The trap should be located in an accessible location in case it needs to be cleaned one day. If you decide to set it into the floor (i.e., completely flush), some work will be required to achieve the necessary depth. It's more work, yes, but the result is worth it: it looks great and also greatly improves accessibility.

Maintenance: easy, but with care

Caring for a resin shower tray is not difficult, but it does require some care:

  • Clean with neutral products, without aggressive chemicals.
  • No metal scouring pads or strong bleach.
  • For limescale, diluted vinegar or a specific bathroom cleaner works wonders.
  • And if a small scratch appears, there are kits that allow you to repair it yourself without going crazy.

Quick comparison with other materials

Acrylic

Cheaper and lighter, yes. But also less durable. Resin wins in durability and aesthetics.

Solid Surface

This one is high-end, very good, and repairable. Although it's also more expensive. The resin is more balanced.

Ceramics

Classic, economical, and very durable. But cold, slippery, and considerably heavier. Resin, in addition to being safer, is more modern and more comfortable to use.

And the price?

It depends on what you choose, of course. But to give you an idea:

  • A standard model (120x70 cm) can cost between 150 and 300 euros.
  • If you're looking for something larger or with special finishes, things can go up to more than 500.
  • To this we must add the installation, which usually costs between 300 and 500 euros, depending on what needs to be done.
