The difference may seem small, but it affects the type of stool, your posture while sitting, and the overall feel of the kitchen. In this article, we explain the standard measurements for each type, how to adjust the height to the main user's height, and the mistakes we see every week in kitchen renovations all over Mallorca.

What is the standard height of a kitchen counter?

The standard height for a kitchen counter is 90 cm if it's an extension of the countertop and 110 cm if it's designed as a raised, American-style counter. The exact measurement within each range depends on the height of the person who cooks most often and the type of stools you'll be using.

A third intermediate option, 100 cm, is gaining ground in kitchens with a central island and allows the counter to be used both for support and for quick eating without jumping to a counter-like height.

What types of kitchen counters are there, depending on the height?

Counter type

Height

Main use

Recommended stool

Countertop level bar

90 cm

Continuation of the work area. If the person who cooks most often is taller or shorter than that, a customized height is recommended. The ergonomic rule is that the countertop should be between 10 and 15 cm below the elbow of the main user in a relaxed position.

User's height

Recommended height of countertop or bar level

1.40 – 1.54 m

76 – 82 cm

1.55 – 1.74 m

85 – 91 cm

1.75 – 1.86 m

94 – 100 cm

Over 1.98 m

106 – 112 cm

If several people of different heights cook at home, it's reasonable to aim for a middle ground (90-92 cm) or, if the budget allows, design two work surfaces at different heights in the kitchen (one at 85 cm for kneading and another at 95 cm for the cooking area, for example). We frequently do this in demanding kitchen renovations.

The minus 30 rule: how to choose the right stool

For the stool to fit comfortably at the counter, the seat should be between 25 and 30 cm below the counter's height. This is the ergonomic distance that allows you to cross your legs, rest your feet, and eat without raising your elbows.

Measure the final height of your counter from the floor to the top

Subtract 25-30 cm to calculate the height of the stool seat.

For a counter at 90 cm → stool with seat at 60-65 cm

For counter at 100 cm → stool with seat at 70-75 cm

For a counter at 110 cm → stool with seat at 75-80 cm

If you're unsure within the range, go lower rather than higher: a stool that's too high will cause your knees to hit the counter. A stool that's too low is less noticeable in daily use.

How deep should a kitchen counter be?

The standard depth of a kitchen counter is 30 to 40 cm if it's used only for eating, and 60 cm if the counter is an extension of the countertop and cooking is done on it. This second measurement coincides with the standard depth of base kitchen cabinets, facilitating structural integration.

If the counter cantilevers out from the countertop (the cleanest visual solution), follow these rules:

Maximum overhang of 30 cm without additional support for 20 mm quartz, granite or porcelain countertops

Maximum overhang of 40 cm for countertops made of technical porcelain stoneware (Dekton, Neolith) or 30 mm quartz

Overhangs of more than 40 cm require concealed metal supports to prevent the countertop from cracking over time.

Common mistakes when installing a kitchen counter

After more than three generations in the kitchen renovations in Mallorca, These are the most common faults we receive for repair:

Putting a counter at 110 cm without considering whether the stool will fit underneath — if your kitchen is less than 3 m long, the raised counter makes circulation uncomfortable

Choosing the height "for aesthetics" instead of for use — a high counter looks great in photos, but if you're going to cook and eat at it every day, 90 cm is more comfortable.

Do not measure the thickness of the countertop when calculating the height — the final height is the base cabinets (72 cm) + plinth (10 cm) + countertop (2-3 cm). If the built-in cabinet was designed for a 2 cm countertop and you then install a 6 cm one, the counter will be too high.

Forget the countertop overhang — if the counter doesn't extend at least 25-30 cm towards the user, there's no legroom and the stool is an arm's length away.

Mixing counter and stool heights inconsistently—the "minus 30" rule isn't optional. If you fall in love with a particular stool, adjust the counter to that height, not the other way around.

Installing power outlets on the front of the overhang — besides being unsightly, electrical regulations in the kitchen and cleaning practices advise against that position

For a more complete overview of how to plan a kitchen with a breakfast bar within a renovation, you'll want to read our guide on open or closed kitchen: which is better.

Frequently asked questions about kitchen counter height

What is the height of an American kitchen counter?

A raised or American-style kitchen counter is typically 110 cm high. It's designed to visually separate the cooking area from the dining or living room, concealing the sink and appliances from the dining area, and is used for informal meals or socializing. It requires stools with seats between 75 and 80 cm high. It's the most common option in open-plan kitchens when the division is desired without adding a physical piece of furniture.

Is a kitchen counter at 90 cm or 110 cm better?

It depends on the actual use. At 90 cm, the counter is a continuation of the countertop; you can cook on it and eat comfortably seated on a low stool. It's the most versatile option and the best fit for medium-sized kitchens. At 110 cm, the counter is strictly for eating or socializing; it hides the clutter of the cooking area and has a more "bar-like" feel. For kitchens where the main dining table is in another room, 90 cm is more practical for daily use.

At what height should a kitchen counter be placed on a central island?

For a central island, 90 cm is the standard height when the island incorporates a sink or cooktop, because you're working at the same height as on the wall countertop. If the island is only used as a table or a work surface for eating, it can be 100 or 110 cm. The important thing is that there is at least 100-120 cm of free space around the island to move around comfortably and open drawers without bumping into anything.

What happens if the kitchen is used by people of very different heights?

The easiest solution is to choose the intermediate height (90-92 cm), which works reasonably well for almost everyone. The optimal solution, budget and space permitting, is to design two work surfaces at different heights in the same kitchen: for example, a sink area at 95 cm and a cooking area at 88 cm. In renovations with a medium-to-high budget, we do this without significant additional cost, and the difference is noticeable every day.

Are you going to renovate your kitchen in Mallorca?

If you're designing a kitchen renovation and want to get the counter height, stools, and worktops right from the start, we can help.
